Gene Taylor Can Live Without Major League Baseball
I’d like to offer my diagnosis (and a possible cure) for what ails Congressman Gene Taylor. Apparently he lacks a love for America’s pastime. From the Laurel Leader Call:
Finally, Taylor said he wants to remove the anti-trust exemption from the insurance companies.
“Only two things have an anti-trust exemption — Major League Baseball, which I could live without, and insurance,” he said. “But, there’s a state law that says I have to have collision insurance to operate a car in Mississippi. The federal government also requires those that live in the flood plain to have flood insurance. Removing that exemption would contribute to substantial savings.”
I guess I can understand where Gene Taylor’s frustration with Major League Baseball comes from. He’s been entrenched in Washington politics for 20 years and nearly the entire time he’s been there, Washington DC didn’t participate in America’s pastime.
Of course, he could always catch an Orioles game in Baltimore, but it can be tough to get permission from the Democrat Leadership to go outside the beltway with so much legislation to shove through. (Congress members ought not be lending their ears to “regular” people, especially in a ballpark.)
It wasn’t until 2005 that Washington finally got a baseball team. The problem is that MLB gave the nice folks inside the DC beltway what was leftover from the Montreal Expos and just slapped a Washington Nationals jersey on them. Darn right I’d be mad too! The Washington Nationals haven’t had a winning season since they started playing and the number of fans in attendance is embarrassing.
Fortunately, there is a possible cure for Gene Taylor. Maybe he and his voting buddy, Barney Frank, can catch a Boston Red Sox game together. I’m sure Barney’s people can make a phone call and get a couple of seats behind the plate. You can’t spill beer and mustard on your shirt when Big Papi knocks one over the fence and leave the park thinking you can live without baseball.
